Shuckin' & Jivin'

Once again it's music Monday and today, I present to you none other then the Johnny Lewis Quartet. This is a local jazz/funk lp from Seattle that I used to see multiple copies of every single day while out diggin' for records around town. These days this has seemed to completely vanish. Original copies hardly ever pop up since being re-issued by Ubiquity. I'm not sure how these were distributed but I know you could definitely purchase copies at his shows. 99% of the copies i've ever found have his autograph on 'em. Johnny was part of the same Lewis family that owned the Paramount theatre. I believe he recorded three albums, this being my favorite one. This was recorded live in '72 at the Trojan Horse. A venue my parents used to frequent back in the day. The lead single from the album is the title track "Shuckin' & Jivin'" and for some reason is a different mix or take than the one on the Lp. The last 60 seconds of the track is a full on bongo/conga drum break. The version here is from the 7" 45 not the album.

This week I bring to you a local Seattle, Washington band called Papaya released in 1976 on the Wolf records label. Another one of those records i've came across numerous times over the years and always threw it to the side. I finally decided to give it a listen one day only to discover the cut "Favela" a hynoptic samba jazz groover complete with a heavy weight brazilian break. A sure fire floor filler and probably one of the best examples of Brazilian fusion out there. It seems to no longer be under the radar as i've had many friends and djs ask me for a copy over the past year.

If you've followed my blog you'll be well aware that my focus has been in educating the globe about local music from the Seattle, Wa. area where I reside. At the request of Matt from Light In The Attic records i'm going to hold off on some of them as they will be featured on my forthcoming Wheedles Groove 7" box set and compilation album/cd. By chance my friend Greasy of the DUG crew came across a 45 by a local area artist named Roger Filgo. Upon learning of this release I started digging for a copy with no luck in scoring one. Greasy eventually passed his copy off to me for my local archives. While searching for some info. on this particular recording I found that he was a session player in town that has passed away. I also, found out that there was a second 45 he recorded after the one Greasy had discovered. It never ends, just when I think I know or have all the local stuff something new pops up! This was recorded in 1977 for the Star Step records label and has a much more electric synth vibe than his earlier funk organ grinder work out.

I had a long time homie (20 + years) "Sam Sneke" of the DVS Crew (Dropping Vicious Style) hook my new Levis denim jacket up today. I tried writing in the mid 80's and it was clear I'm not a graffiti artist! Although, my tags were definitely all city. I still have my two original jackets from the 80's that "Could One" from T.U.A (The Unusual Artists) did for me. There couldn't have been a better name for their crew. Seriously...... Anyway I have those jackets in storage and will pull them out and post pics of them on here soon.

On The Southside of Chicago Where They Boogie...

Touched down in the windy city last Thursday afternoon and the big homie was waiting out front of the airport for me in the Cadillac. Guess where our very first stop was? A record store of course!

Hit up K Starkes spot. He usually has some quality stuff and again he did but the only problem is that I didn't find anything I needed in there. That's the good thing about already having stuff. I'll always dig for records though, because you just never know what you'll find.

Had to stop by Dusty Groove because i'd never been there yet to the physical store. Nice place. Good for new stuff. Once again I left empty handed. I did hit the mexican seafood spot across the street though and proceeded to get busy!

Next stop was Out of the Past and once inside this place lived up to it's name. I don't know how many records where up in this spot. The only thing is that there's absolutely no organization and it's extremely dirty inside. If you wanna spend anytime in this place your best to bring your mask and gloves and take some airborne before you go in. Great spot though and very nice lady running the place. I can tell this spot was at one time a complete goldmine. It actually still is as I was informed there is a basement the same exact size with just as many or more records in it that no one has seen yet!!! If that's true then there is an abundance of straight platinum sitting in there waiting to be had. There were boxes and boxes of 45's every where. I looked as long as I could. I purchased some 45's after about 3 hours of digging and was Audi 5000

Next up I hit a few local private collectors/dealers and that's where the real heat was at. I crossed off a small pile of my top wants which is no easy task and that definitely made my day and trip. It was dumb late at this point and I headed over to my man Tone B Nimble's b day bash where I ended the night with the homies Rude One, Proh Mic, and others........

We scooped up Skeme at O'Hare after a good nights rest and shot over to see Mark at Peabody's...

Left with a nice stack of goodness and hit Harold's Fried Chicken a legendary spot in Chi for food.

I'm trying to cut back on the fried stuff but Skeme and Otto sure weren't!!! After throwing down it was off to Beverly's

Another spot thats been around for years and had massive amount of records in there. Amazingly though I only walked out with one 45

Final digging stop was Fire Sound. It took crazy long to find this place as he had moved and we had the wrong address and to top it off we hit rush hour traffic which was no joke..... Once we got there duke wasn't even opened but he was there and let us come in anyway. We all walked off with a nice little stack of 45's. Very cool guy running this spot as well. At this point it was about that time to go show Chicago exactly what the "Hot Peas and Butta" party is all about!

A good and full 35 hours spent in the windy city! Special guest dj's on this stop playing alongside myself and Skeme were King Otto and Meaty Ogre and neither disappointed dropping straight joints.... The HPB way! Afterwards the club owner offered a dj residency at his spot. Uh, thx but yeah perhaps quarterly? I'm not trying to be there all the time but most definitely regularly, you know I gotta keep it moving....

Shouts out to everyone down for the cause and that made this one happen. I can not thank you enough for making my life wonderful. The Dark Room, Rude One, Meaty Ogre, King Otto, Skeme Richards, Sheila Shred One, Mama Bear, Darryn Jones, Zernelle Gille, Mark at Peabody, Rob from Numero, Tone B Nimble and the list goes on.

So I landed in Riverside, California this past Monday and there couldn't be a more appropriate name for this night, I mean seriously. This is a Monday night and look at the line....

That was at 10:00PM when I arrived. The line only grew and got bigger as the night went on...

They totally do it up right at this spot. The 8 year run has clearly proven that. It's packed out early and they really have fun here. It's great to have the entire crowd singing along with the records early on in the night. It just shows you what kind of night it's going to be...

I told you they do it right, look at this sound system!!!

I'll definitely be back to rock this spot regularly. Shout out to DJ Erok and the crew and the entire Sevilla staff.

A Day with The Butta Bros.

Last night was round two of the "Hot Peas & Butta" x "Dug" party in Seattle. It's been a few months since linking with my brother from another Skeme Richards. I was was not only amped to spin a night of great music on 45's but to run amuck through the streets with my mans and them. First stop was none other than the Seattle pinball museum. Its's time for us to prepare and get our training in as our crew will openly challenge any other dj crews out there to a tournament of pinball.

After putting the smash down on these machines we wandered the streets of chinatown ending up at the Seattle Kung Fu associations martial arts supply shop.

This was one of my favorite spots as a kid. We didn't buy anything though. (I already have Supreme nunchucks).

I ran into an old friend in the shop I haven't seen in years and she was buying a pack of throwing stars and a black robe of some kind. It's mid summer so halloween isn't anytime soon. Somebody is probably in for a little trouble at some point crossing her path. We finally caught up with Big Chan the kung fu movie master to peep some of the collection.

Of course he kept bring stuff out and put me up on a movie featuring a kung fu gang of woman called the "Black Tight Killers" and get this, they use 45's as weapons and throw them at their enemies! So I obviously must find this film now....

We've been on this kung fu kick (pun intended) for a while now and wanted to pay respect to one of our heroes and all time greatest master of martial arts Bruce Lee...

It's a very serene scene there at the lakeview cemetery and it was spiritual bliss to pay tribute to him. Since we weren't far from the ill sneaker spot RPS we stopped in to peep the latest goods and of course Cool Chikara was there and laced us up with new gear. Thx my man!

Next stop? The homie Jake One's, we stopped by for a minute to peep the studio, records, sound sessions on deck and to see Maria the newest member of the family.

At this point the clock was ticking and we had to be at the club to sound check and get set up. However, with all this constant rippin' & runnin' we noticed we didn't eat anything the entire day and our stomachs were letting out some Tony the tiger growls.... I know my brother loves his hamburgers, so off to Red Mill it was...

So good! Hands down the best in town but i've yet to indulge at Zippy's which I hear is giving 'em a run for their money...
At this point we were running behind schedule so we smashed over to Lo-Fi to met up with our favorite nerds the DUG crew.

There was already quite a long line upon arrival and we knew it was gonna be another great "Hot Peas & Butta" party for the books... We set up shop and the dance floor was packed immediately.

I touched the decks and in no less than 15 seconds had fools twisting their faces up, and I mean that in a good way! (LOL)

The night seemed like it ended to soon as it usually does at great parties. We packed it up and packed it in and headed straight directly to the Sea-Tac airport so Skeme could get on his 6AM flight for Houston tonight. I made it home and in bed at 5AM, and this ladies & gentleman is an average day in the life of the Butta Bros.

Requests Make No Sense

A note for the general public that attend night clubs. Requesting songs from the dj really doesn't make any sense. You're either going to request a good song or a bad one. If it's a good one the chances are that it's going to get played anyway. If it's a bad one, why would a dj jeopardize the entire clubs enjoyment to play a sh**ty song for one person? It's really simple science. Relax, have a drink, mix & mingle, dance and have fun. Let the dj do his job.

My birthday bash was held this past weekend. I've always been an all or nothing type of person. This time i'd have to say it was all.

I started out the evening with dinner at El Gaucho one of my favorite steak houses... After that it was off to to Republiq night club. Upon my arrival the line to get in was literally a city block long and a half block long for the v.i.p line and it was only 10:30pm. That's unheard of for a club in the city of Seattle. Right then and there I knew the night was gonna be totally banoodles and it was.... In fact I found this quote right here: "The amount of people at Republiq tonight is incomprehensible. We promise you've never seen anything like it." Taken from the Seattle Times news paper.

Bottles were popped and it was party time for all. Big shouts to Jamal Crawford, Nate Robinson, Meagan Good, Maliah Michel, Waka Flocka, Isaiah Thomas, John Hall, Lumin and all the fly ladies that came through to party with me. Extra special huge thank you to Soul Gorilla, Home Team, T.J. From TPD, Republiq Nightclub, Arnold Kim, B-Boy Worthing, Benito Blanco, D Look, Charma and Nicole Moses who all went the extra mile to make sure I had a good time.

The weekly event known as the Do Over has been the jump-off for 7 years straight in Los Angeles and is now making monthly stops for the second summer in a row in a Portland, OR - and they started it with a BANG! The Adidas sponsored event at Produce Row Cafe had a huge following last year and overflowed to a massive level during its first month this summer - there was a line down the block for the whole event. May's Do Over featured residents Haycock and Jamie Strong along with special guests DaM-Funk and Supreme La Rock and local DJ, Ante Up's own, DJ Nature. It was a great event and an ideal way to kick off the second season of Portland's hosting of The Do Over.

This video was done out of love for the long-standing Do Over party that was brought to Portland last year. In no way does the Do Over, Adidas or Produce Row have any ties to Ante Up PDX or this Video... Long story short, no one paid us to do this video and we aren't getting anything out of it. We're just showing love to everyone that helps put on this event.

Growing up as a teenager in Seattle, Washington in the 80's we had only one station that played "Rap" music. I believe it was the only station in the nation besides Mr. Magic's "Rap Attack" that had a specialty all rap music radio show. It was a 2 hour specialty show that aired on the AM dial at 1250 with the call letters KFOX. You must remember this was a time when they didn't even offer a rap section at the record stores yet! This was a very popular radio program and I can remember everyone couldn't wait until Sunday night to see what new joints DJ Nasty Nes Rodriguez was going to play. We would record the shows on cassette tape and play them at school on our ghetto blasters every Monday.

Just the other day me and Jake One were discussing how back then we had to wait all week until Sunday night to hear a new song. Nowadays you can simply go to your computer and google search it or you tube it to hear it or watch the video. You kids are lucky these days and don't even know it! This particular show i'm posting up featured a local up and coming dj by the name of Sir Mix A Lot. He had recently obtained a "DMX" drum machine and brought it by the station to play some live beats. This show aired on 9.21.85

Ok, so the cats out of the bag! Trax NYC is my official jeweler. I come from the golden era of hip hop when "trunk" jewels were made popular by Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, etc.

Well, year after year of buying pieces I stumbled upon Trax while I was roaming around the diamond district. You'll see if you read some of my older posts here on my blog.

I recently did a deal on a diamond necklace from them and I must say the price was great, the quality is superior and the customer service was top notch. 3 things I would have never expected from a city known for hustling people. This past Sunday night was labor day weekend and my man Marek the owner of Tits brand clothings b-day bash.

It was my first time playing at this new spot and I was digging it. The sound was on point, dj booth placement was decent etc. Probably due to the fact that this place was put together by TJ from TPD one of the cities best promotion teams. They've been around, so they know what they're doing.

Tits brand has always had my back since day one and I'll never forgot that. They have given me my own collaboration t shirt with them twice and had me do a few ltd. edition mix cd's for the brand.

Props to Marek for creating one of the hottest brands in the street right now. There isn't a tv show or rap video where you don't see someone wearing a Tits brand shirt.

It was starting to pack out and get thick early. I knew it was going to be another good one for me.

The Trust Rooftop Party

It went down last Sunday afternoon. The roof top terrace of the Red Lion hotel in downtown Seattle was the place to be.

The day started out overcast and cloudy. It looked like the rain would be coming down any minute. By the time the sound system was set up and the grill came out so did the sun!

The dj line up alone should have brought the entire city out! Introcut, J-Justice, Atlee, Kid Hops, Riz, Carlos Mendoza and yours truly. I decided I would do an all 45 set. Actually J-Justice made the suggestion and I was with it. I then decided I would play 45 45's in 45 minutes and went for it.

It's hard enough to play with 45's as it is. Then they had the turntables spread out as far apart as possible and placed with the tone arms in the way (non battle style). Were these guys trying to hang me out to dry or what?! I rolled with it and still did my thing. All original 45's. I wish I would have recorded the set but didn't. Oh well....

As part of my east coast weekend dj run I got to play at the Hot Peas & Butta + Record Breakin' release party for the new record. It's officially out now at a finer record store near you, so go get it! It's worth it for the art work alone.

I had a solid disco nap before making the 3 hour drive to NYC so I was good to go. The only problem was that we were doing an outdoor party and it was totally overcast and pouring down rain when we pulled in.

However we set up anyway and the minute we were ready to rock the clouds went away as did the rain and the sun came out.

We wasted no time at all in getting the party started...

Mad dj's were in the building. The ill footage was being ran on three screens and the vibe was all the way right. Statik was in the house and we had dj sets from The Record Player, Junior of Record Breakin, Lumin from Miami, Skeme, Amir, Myself, etc. Can you say monster line up?! Geez....

A highlight for me was getting this Record Breakin 45' carrying bag.

When we arrived the first thing I noticed was the huge "Banksy" piece on the side of the building.

I spent a majority of the day trying to figure out how I could cut it out of the wall and take it with us!!!!

This is my 2nd time playing at the Walnut Room in Philadelphia, Pa. this year. I left straight from the event I dj'd at the night before and headed directly to the airport to make my flight in time. I barely made it, was totally stressed out and super duper tired......

I had a layover in Houston, Tx and ran into Freeway aka: Philly Freezer. He was coming back from some dates on the road with my original partner in rhyme Jake One. I touched down in the city of brotherly love and it was a cool 100 degrees out. Remember their time zone is 3 hours ahead of mine. Which means it was damn near time to go dj already!!!

After checking into my hotel, somehow getting into the middle of a fist fight in the street and freshening up. I hit alfa for dinner. After throwing down I headed to the club and DJ Statik the Saturday night resident was setting it off.

I jumped on the decks and proceeded to sweat like George Foreman in Rumble in the Jungle. I must have lost at least 5lbs. I've never ever been that hot or sweated like that while playing ever.

I think it was 100 degrees inside that club and that was with the air conditioning on.

Afterwards a cool shower and nap before getting up and heading to NYC. Had to stop by the big homie Rich Medina's to peep his new digs...

Seatown really comes out when ever a celebrity or well known sports figure have a party. This was no exception. The huge Fremont studio warehouse was completely sold out by midnight. The funny thing was up until then there were only about thirty people in the building.

Gloria Velez hosted and actually showed up this time!!!

There was definitely a great vibe in the air for this night. Females were dressed to impress and ready to party away.

DJ Drama and I traded duties on the decks switching off going back and forth. Another great party. So many people were there I did not get to see. I left and went straight to sea-tac airport to rock Philly the next day...

I was invited by the Suntzu sound crew to throw down with them at their monthly party TRUST last night.

I can honestly say that I can't remember the last time I had this much fun dj'n

Their whole thing is about you being you and doing you the way it should be. A lot of folks don't understand that a dj isn't always playing what he or she personally likes but simply rocking a party and making sure the crowd is happy. The crowd that attend these parties are open minded to music and are there for one thing, to party!!! In other words these are not your average bottle service club douchebags...

What made this so much fun and great for me personally, was the fact I wasn't being bombarded by beckys requesting crapola all night long. I let loose with house, disco, latin, boogie etc. The ish I'm really know for... and of course some exclusives.

Hats off to Kid Hops and Suntzu sound for doing something great for our city.

J Justice warmed up the crowd to the point of them being very well ripened for me by the time I got on....

Which honestly made it rather easy for me. The crowd was wide open and ready for just about anything I threw down!
